Bicycle D- Lock - the smaller the better

Bicycle D- Lock - the smaller the better

Pretty much the best lock style you can have for your bicycle is whats known as a D-Lock or U-lock.

Always buy the best lock you can afford balanced against perhaps the actual and sentimental value of your bicycle. No lock can protect your bike completely but a little technique with a small D-Lock can go a long long way.

Arguably any lock is better than no lock but U-Locks definitely have the edge over of a chain or corded lock made of wire - it really is too easy to cut through the most basic ones.

When my service and repair customers sometimes ask me about this I always suggest buying a D-Lock with a small space between the locking bar and the D-section.

The reason for this is so that whether the bike is locked to an immovable object (like a lamp-post) or other piece of street furniture and even if thats not possible, the smaller the D-section is,  the harder its is for an opportunist thief to get the leverage to cut through it fast with bolt cutters.

If the 'D' is packed out with tubing from bike and ideally from a solid piece of street furniture its one of the best security techniques there is.
