We're all leading increasingly busy lives so its hard to fit everything in - its easy to spend a long time keeping a bicycle in showroom condition but in the real world they get ridden and used and then propped up in the corner. As long as the pedals keep turning then its all good. To keep the wheels moving however theres some basic checks everyone.
Whatever type of bicycle you ride once a month check the tyre pressure - even the best inner tubes or tubeless systems loose a little pressure naturally over the course of a month so its good to check this.
There should be at least a little moisture in your chain so if its looking bone dry then simply apply two or three drops of oil to the chain - modern lubricants go a long way.
Last but not least check your brakes regularly whether they are rim brakes or disc brakes if they're feeling slack and not inspiring confident stopping its time to attend them. Brake pads get contaminated, rims get dirty and wear, disc rotors are the same- its your braking surface and they get contaminated and worn down too, sometimes an adjustment will do. If you're confident do it yourself if not find a mechanic or a shop or a friend who knows how to adjust them and change the pads if needed.
If you're a budding mechanic the Park Tools Big Blue Book of Bicycle Repair is a great place to start.
Just a little care will go a long long way.
